Attention Scientists: All data posted on this website are preliminary. We are happy to share our data. If you use our data, please email us to let us know what you're doing. We would enjoy collaborating with you.
Use the table below to find data files with pressure, temperature, humidity, and ozone from our ozonesonde launches. You can also find graphs of the ozone profiles and the predicted balloon trajectories. If you find an instrument package, email us the experiment number (found on the outside of the instrument package) and location where you found it. We offer a reward for mailing the instruments back to us at Hokkaido University. Detailed information can be found on the instruments themselves. See the picture below to get an idea of what the instrument package looks like.

The Microtops Section Contains weekly Microtops data files from our two Microtops instruments.
The Trajectory files show predicted air mass paths as calculated using the NASA GSFC trajectory model (Schoeberl and Sparling, 1995) at three levels: 500, 1500, and 2500 m initial trajectory altitude. Two products are presented on this site: the 5-day back trajectories are run from a uniform grid centered on Sapporo using 6-hourly 1X1 NMC reanalysis data. The 4-day forward trajectories are run from a uniform grid around Beijing using 12-hourly 1X1 NMC 5-day forecast data.
Launch Period 5 - 31 August 2009
X - INTEX-B formatted ascii data file
P - partial presure ozone, temperature, and theta profiles
MR - mixing ratio ozone and relative humidity profiles
W - wind direction and speed profiles
TrMR - tropospheric ozone mixing ratio, relative humidity, and theta profiles
TrW - tropospheric wind direction and speed profiles
SO2 - experimental SO2 and ozone profiles
Traj - Google Map GPS trajectory and predicted landing site
Details for each file can be found on my blog site. Data files now include estimates of SO2 concentrations derived from differencing the filtered and unfiltered ozone concentrations measured on dual-sonde payloads. This SO2 data product remains experimental, and caution is advised in its use. If you are interested in the SO2 data, please contact the PI before publication.

Study Period 25 July - 18 September 2009
Using 4-day forward trajectories with NCEP reanalysis winds run in kinematic mode in the NASA GSFC Trajectory Model (Schoeberl & Sparling, 1995), we examine the outflow from the region around Beijing. The trajectories run for start on the date noted in the table and run forward in time using analyzed winds for the first ~2.5 days and forecast winds for the last ~1.5 days. We also use 5-day backward trajectories run using the same model with NCEP reanalysis winds to diagnose where the air over Sapporo originates. The date noted in the table is the start day of the back trajectory run. Trajectories are initialized from 500 m to 3.0 km above each location.
Note that trajectories in the boundary layer need to be interpreted with some caution and represent only possible air parcel paths.
