"The Operation and Science of the Chandra X-ray Observatory"

Brad Spitzbart (VU '97)

Chandra X-ray Center

Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory

The Chandra X-ray Observatory was launched by space shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999 to explore the high energy universe of strong magnetic fields, extreme gravity, and explosive forces at an unprecented 0.5 arcsecond resolution. Brad Spitzbart (VU, '97) joined the Science Operations Team at the Chandra X-ray Center in Cambridge, MA in July 2000. He works as a data analyst responsible for monitoring the performance, health, and safety of the Observatory to maintain the most efficient, highest quality science output. This talk will cover the history and technical specifications of Chandra and its complex day-to-day operations. Some of the fascinating science results from solar system objects to black holes, star forming regions to supernova remnants will be presented. Mr. Spitzbart will discuss his specific role in the spacecraft's operation and briefly mention future X-ray missions.
